Hand Made Wood Kayaks And Paddles

The Greenlander

What makes a Greenland paddle different?

Greenlander

It's short, It's too narrow, It's symmetrical, It cant possibly work! That's our modern paradigm... the Inuit would disagree.

Reducing paddle weight and blade width reduces repetitive load on the shoulders, allowing a more efficient cadence, thus reducing fatigue. The Greenland paddle also reduces the risk of repetitive strain wrist injury by eliminating the constant wrist work necessitated by an offset blade. The narrow blade all but eliminates undesirable head wind effects on the paddle.

Used in a high angle paddling style, it provides a strong drive, facilitating technical paddle work. It's just magic when it comes to the "Eskimo Roll".

The Greenlander is based heavily on traditional 18th century Inuit design and is typically paddled with hands on the blade.
